김해시는 한림면 장방리 장재교 인근 화포천에서 가시연 군락을 발견했다고 29일 밝혔다.

가시연은 수련과에 속하는 한해살이 수생식물로, 수심이 얕고 물 흐름이 느린 연못과 습지에서 자란다. 서식지 감소와 수환경 변화로 개체 수가 줄면서 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급으로 지정돼 보호받고 있다.

확인된 군락에서는 둥글고 큰 잎이 수면을 덮고 있으며, 잎 표면과 가장자리에 돋은 가시와 함께 보라색 꽃이 피어나는 모습이 관찰되고 있다.

김해시는 가시연 군락의 안정적인 생육을 위해 개화 상태와 생육 환경, 주변 수질 등 서식 환경 변화를 지속적으로 확인하고 훼손 요인 관리에 나설 계획이다.
