Gyeongnam Province, ‘The Future of SMR: The World Asks, and Gyeongnam Answers’
Small Modular Reactor (SMR) International Conference Held
On the 22nd, Gyeongsangnam-do Province held the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) International Conference at the Changwon Convention Center under the theme of ‘The Future of SMR: The World Asks, and Gyeongnam Answers’.
The ‘Gyeongnam Small Modular Reactor (SMR) International Conference’, held for the first time this year, was planned to share the status of design and manufacturing technology development of small modular reactors (SMR) with leading global small modular reactor companies, domestic nuclear power companies, and research institutes, and to discuss Gyeongnam Province’s preemptive dominance of the small modular reactor market and fostering a global small modular reactor (SMR) manufacturing cluster.
Gyeongnam Governor Park Wan-soo said in his opening remarks, “Recently, cutting-edge industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data are developing rapidly, and the demand for electricity is increasing worldwide.” He added, “Amidst these changes, small modular reactors, or SMRs, which are carbon-free energy sources and stable and sustainable energy sources, are attracting attention from around the world.”
He also said, “Last June, our province established the Gyeongsangnam-do Nuclear Energy Promotion Comprehensive Plan and announced that it would invest 2.6 trillion won by 2032 and develop the nuclear power industry, including SMR technology development.” He added, “The government’s will to revitalize the nuclear power ecosystem and Gyeongnam’s efforts to promote SMRs will combine to make Gyeongsangnam-do a true global center for the SMR industry.”
He concluded by saying, “I hope that this international conference will serve as an opportunity for the development of all industries, including SMRs, in Korea, and that Korea and Gyeongnam will become leaders in the global SMR industry through cooperation with leading global companies.”
The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 300 people including Gyeongsangnam-do Governor Park Wan-soo, Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Council Speaker Choi Hak-beom, Ministry of Science and ICT Research and Development Policy Director Hwang Pan-sik, Doosan Energy Vice Chairman Jeong Yeon-in, Danish Ambassador to Korea Svend Olling, OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Director Véronique Luyer, Korea Institute of Materials Science President Choi Cheol-jin, Korea Energy Economics Institute President Kim Hyeon-je, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Central Research Institute President Shin Ho-cheol, and Korea Electric Power Technology Research Institute President Seol Yeong-sil, as well as domestic and international nuclear power companies and research institutes.
In particular, the conference was attended by leading global small modular reactor (SMR) companies such as NuScale Power, TerraPower, X-Energy, Seaborg, and Atkins Realis, and served as a venue for cooperation to establish a Gyeongnam SMR manufacturing cluster.
After the opening ceremony, Gyeongnam Province signed a business agreement with Terrapower and Seaborg, leading global small modular reactor (SMR) companies, for joint cooperation in designing and producing next-generation nuclear power plant (Terrapower-sodium-cooled fast reactor, Seaborg-small molten salt reactor) parts and equipment, and establishing a research and development (R&D) center in the province.
The province expected that this business agreement would strengthen the next-generation nuclear power plant technology competitiveness of nuclear power companies in the province and provide opportunities to participate in technology development.
In the keynote speech, there were presentations by Veronique Luyer, Director of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), a major OECD affiliate, and Beomjin Jeong, President of the Korean Nuclear Society.
