[브레이크뉴스=양영석 기자] 의령군이 오태완 군수 공약 사업으로 유스호스텔 건립이 추진된다.

 

의령군은 지난달 설계 공모를 마치고 내년 초 착공을 시작해 2026년 6월 유스호스텔을 준공할 예정이라고 22일 밝혔다.

 

의령 유스호스텔은 총면적 4,000㎡, 지상 4층 규모로 37개 객실에 150여명을 수용할 수 있다.

 

또 회의와 학술대회 등을 열 수 있는 대회의장이 만들어진다.

 

위치는 의령읍 하리 옛 5870부대 5대대 부지로 특히 연간 40만명이 방문하는 경상남도교육청 미래교육원 반경 1km 안에 있다.

 

의령군은 지방소멸대응기금으로 확보한 71억원을 포함해 사업비 166억원을 들여 유스호스텔을 건립한다.

 

미래교육원이 의령에 들어서는 게 확정되면서 외부에서 의령으로 온 학생들을 수용할 시설이 없어 유스호스텔 건립 필요성이 꾸준히 제기되어 왔다.

 

오태완 군수는 2015년 6월부터 비어 있는 5870부대 5대대 부지를 최적의 장소로 정하고 사업을 추진했다.

 

9년 넘게 흉물로 덩그러니 남아 있는 건물을 처리해달라는 주민들의 민원을 처리하고 미래교육원 주변 숙박시설이 없는 불편 사항을 동시에 해결했다.

 

각종 대회·전지훈련 선수단 유치에도 청신호가 켜졌다.

오태완 군수는 "미래교육원 개원과 리치리치페스티벌 성공으로 의령군에 일하러, 놀러 오는 생활인구가 급속도로 늘고 있다"며 "변변한 체류형 숙박시설 하나 없는 의령에 새로운 변화를 체감하는 또 다른 상징적인 건물이 들어서 정말 기쁘다"고 말했다.
