[Contributed] Cespedes Park orders development of tourist attractions

In the Nammun district of Ungcheon-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, there is a small neighborhood park that seems to be hidden.

This park was created when large-scale apartments were built in the Nammun district, and that is the ‘Cespedes’ Park.

Cespedes Park is a place named to commemorate a person called 'Father Cespedes', and although some is known about the priest, there will be more people who are unfamiliar with it.

The priest was the first Westerner to follow the Japanese to Korea during the Imjin War, and was a priest who preached Catholicism against the Japanese in this land.

Born in Madrid in 1551, he was educated by the Jesuits of Salamanca, Spain, and came to Japan via India.

During his stay in Japan, he continued his missionary activities while interacting with the ruling class in Japan. With that relationship, he followed the Japanese during the Imjin War to Joseon, stayed in Ungcheon Waseong Fortress, and did evangelical missionary work for the Japanese military during the war for about 1 year and 6 months. and returned to Japan.

The priest landed in Joseon on December 27, 1593, the year after the outbreak of the Japanese Invasion of Korea, and it is said that his first landing point was in front of Sado Village in Ungcheon, Jinhae.

At that time, the first Japanese army commanded by Konishi Yukinaga was stationed in Ungcheon Waseong Fortress, and Gonishi was a devout Kirishitan (Catholic) who even received the baptismal name of Augustine. There were many believers. That is why, despite the shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi's policy of rejecting Catholicism, he secretly invited Father Cespedes.

The fact that Father Cespedes came to Korea has many historical implications. One of his historians argues that some of the myths learned in his textbooks need to be changed.

First of all, the priest is the first Westerner to visit Joseon and the first person to introduce Joseon, a hermit country, to the West, which was not known at all until then. However, we are known as ‘Weltevree’ (Korean name: Park Yeon) from the Netherlands as the first Westerners to land in Joseon.

In 1653, while sailing to Japan as Dutch, Hamel and his party drifted to Jeju Island. Hamel was imprisoned in Joseon for 7 years before escaping to Japan, returning to his home country, and writing in detail what he experienced in Joseon. ', and Hamel's Drift is also well known as the record of introducing Joseon to the West for the first time.

On the other hand, not much is known about the fact that Father Cespedes came to Joseon 30-50 years earlier than this. The above three priests informed the parish office of their activities in Joseon in the form of an epistle to the parish office four times, which introduces the devastation of Joseon caused by the plunder by the Japanese army, and the climate and living conditions of Joseon.

Content such as 'A pity that a war that no one wanted was waged by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's recklessness', 'Craving for technology and a peace treaty for death, disease, and orphans', and 'Victory of the Korean navy at sea and turtle ships' As it was recorded from the perspective of a foreigner who experienced it firsthand, it deserves to be evaluated as an excellent resource for research on the history of the Imjin War.

It is remarkable that the three priests informed the parish office in the form of letters about what happened in Joseon. At that time, the Catholic Church was forming a global network and exerting great political influence, so the three priests wanted to arouse public opinion by informing them of the horrors of the Imjin War. In this way, it can be said that the 'role of a priest in the Japanese military' as claimed by some today is an extremely distorted view.

According to the history of the introduction of Catholicism to the Joseon Dynasty, it is known that Western culture was introduced by envoys traveling to and from the Qing Dynasty in the mid-16th century.

Crown Prince Sohyeon, who had been taken hostage by the Qing Dynasty after the Byeongja Horan, brought Catholic books to the public when he returned home. In the 18th century, Lee Seung-hoon, who was the first Korean to be baptized and returned home from the Qing Dynasty, was the first to propagate to the noble class and middle class. is said to have been made This is the claim that Catholicism was transmitted from the north, that is, from the Qing Dynasty, and spread from the leadership.

In contrast, the missionary activities of the three priests began when they entered Joseon in 1593, a century earlier. This fact is different from the claim that Catholicism was introduced from the north in the mid-16th century. Although the event was made by the invitation of the Japanese army and the scope of their activities was limited against the Japanese military, it is believed that various religious considerations were also taken into account while contacting them, considering that the record of the horrors of the Koreans held captive in the barracks was recorded in Seogin. It is also possible to speculate.

What can be seen as evidence to support this conjecture is that when many Koreans captured by Japan were doomed to be sold into slavery, there is a record that the three priests turned many of them back to Catholicism and freed them from slavery. With the efforts of the three priests, it is said that hundreds of people were released from their captivity at this time.

Then, what happened to the Koreans who were freed from their prisoner status after that?

From Daemado, you can clearly see Busanpo and Geoje Island. It was recorded that the Japanese went to and from Jepo (Ungcheon, Jinhae) overnight. Some of them may have escaped and returned home after the Japanese Insurgency was settled. At this time, some of the Catholics who returned to Korea did their own religious activities even after returning to their homeland. can be guessed.

In fact, the fact that Catholicism was strong in the southern coastal areas such as Jinhae and Geoje from an early age, and that many people were persecuted during the Catholic sufferings such as Gihae and Persecution, can be seen as evidence to support this.

Therefore, it can be said that the origin of Catholicism in this land was not transmitted from the north, but from the south in conjunction with the Imjin War.

The Three Fathers Memorial Park was created by the Spanish government in 1993 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first visit of a native (Spanish) priest to Chosun, by producing a commemorative plaque and delivering it to Jinhae City (before it was incorporated into Changwon City).

Originally, the monument was installed in Pungho Park behind the new building in Jinhae, but an apartment complex was built in the Nammun district of Ungcheon-dong in 2016, and it was moved to the present location in the park considering that this was the place where the three priests first landed and is nearby. The surrounding sculptures were also erected.

When the monument of the three priests was erected in the park, there was an attempt to deny him by labeling him as a ‘war priest’ for preaching the gospel and holding a mass for the Japanese soldiers who were fighting against Joseon. Such attempts have been made before the construction of the monument, and for the same reason, even the Catholic community refuses to publicly promote his activities, which has not been corrected even today.

However, as mentioned above, it is not right to deny the three priests' activities even though there are many things worth commemorating and it is a historical fact that is passed down through records.

Professor Park Cheol, a former dean of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, who received a doctorate degree from the University of Madrid and studied Father Cespedes, said in his books and lectures that he made the mistake of criticizing only one aspect of history. I'm sorry I'm doing this,' he said.

Lastly, I would like to add that Changwon City should take an active role in securing tourism resources. There are various forms of development of tourism resources, such as blessed nature, historical sites, relics, and food.

However, it is really sad to have to build a monument and remember the past history. On the other hand, in Gangjin, Jeollanam-do, where Hamel lived for 7 years, he made a ‘Hamel Memorial Hall’ by collecting the traces he left, and in Danyang, North Chungcheong Province, a tourist complex was created based on the story of General Ondal and Princess Pyeonggang. Even compared to these, the activities and stories of the three priests do not seem light at all, but it is not desirable to neglect them.

If the city of Changwon follows their footsteps and carefully records the records to create a story, it will discover a new aspect of the history of Catholicism in Korea, and I think it may become a new holy place for Catholics.
