[브레이크뉴스=강동호 기자] 합천군의 운석충돌구가 생명 기원 연구의 새로운 가능성을 제시하는 연구 결과와 해외 과학 콘텐츠를 통해 세계 과학계의 관심을 받고 있다.

 

합천군은 약 5만 년 전 형성된 한반도 최초의 운석충돌구가 최근 국제 학술연구와 세계적인 과학 유튜브 채널 소개를 계기로 학술적·관광적 가치가 높아지고 있다고 밝혔다.

 

지난 4월 해외 과학 유튜브 채널 'GeologyHub'는 '한국에 있는 가장 젊은 대형 운석충돌구'를 주제로 합천운석충돌구를 소개했다.

 

영상에서는 운석 충돌로 형성된 분지와 호수, 한국지질자원연구원의 연구 성과, 충돌구에서 발견된 스트로마톨라이트(남세균 화석) 등을 다루며 지질학적 의미를 설명했다.

 

한국지질자원연구원의 연구 결과는 최근 국제 학술지인 'Communications Earth & Environment'에 게재됐다.

 

연구진은 운석 충돌 이후 형성된 호수에서 스트로마톨라이트가 발달한 사실을 확인했으며, 동위원소 분석을 통해 우주에서 유래한 물질이 포함된 환경에서도 남세균이 생명 활동을 했다는 점을 밝혀냈다.

이 연구는 운석 충돌이 단순한 지질학적 사건을 넘어 초기 생명체가 살아갈 수 있는 환경을 조성했을 가능성을 제시한 것으로 평가받고 있다.

 

합천운석충돌구는 2020년 한국지질자원연구원이 시추조사를 통해 충격원뿔암과 충격을 받은 석영 등을 확인하면서 운석충돌구로 공식 규명됐다.

 

이후 충돌호 퇴적층과 고기후, 충돌광물 등에 대한 연구가 이어지며 국내외 학계의 연구 대상지로 활용되고 있다.

 

합천군은 운석충돌구를 활용한 과학·교육·관광 기반 구축에도 속도를 내고 있다. 오는 10월 준공을 목표로 전시관과 체험시설 등을 갖춘 운석충돌구 거점센터를 조성하고 있으며, 탐방로와 전망시설도 정비하고 있다.

 

또 2028년 국가지질공원 인증을 목표로 지질유산 조사와 교육프로그램 개발 등을 추진하고 있으며, 장기적으로는 유네스코 세계지질공원 인증에도 도전할 계획이다.

 

인증이 이뤄질 경우 아시아 최초이자 세계 세 번째 운석충돌구 세계지질공원이 된다.

 

김윤철 합천군수는 "합천운석충돌구가 세계적인 과학 콘텐츠와 연구를 통해 주목받고 있다"며 "과학과 교육, 관광이 융합된 세계적 지질명소로 육성해 지역의 새로운 성장동력으로 만들어 가겠다"고 말했다.

Last April, the overseas science YouTube channel 'GeologyHub' introduced the Hapcheon Meteorite Crater under the theme "The Youngest Large Meteorite Crater in Korea." The video covered the basin and lake formed by the meteorite impact, the research achievements of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), and stromatolites (cyanobacteria fossils) discovered within the crater, explaining its geological significance.

 

The research results from KIGAM were recently published in the international academic journal 'Communications Earth & Environment'. The research team confirmed that stromatolites developed in the lake formed after the meteorite impact, and through isotope analysis, revealed that cyanobacteria engaged in life activities even in an environment containing materials of cosmic origin.

The Hapcheon Meteorite Impact Crater was officially identified as a meteorite impact crater in 2020 when the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources confirmed the presence of impact cone rocks and impacted quartz through drilling surveys. Since then, research on impact lake sedimentary layers, paleoclimate, and impact minerals has continued, making it a utilized research site for domestic and international academic communities.
