▲ 사천초 총동창회, 제23회 기미년 독립만세운동 재현행사 개최

[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 107년 전 교복 입은 어린 학생들이 외쳤던 ‘대한독립 만세’의 함성이 오늘날 사천에서 다시 울려 퍼졌다.

 

사천초등학교 총동창회 기미년독립만세운동재현추진위원회는 20일 사천초등학교 운동장에서 ‘제23회 기미년 독립만세운동 재현행사’를 개최하고, 선열들의 숭고한 나라사랑 정신을 시민과 함께 되새겼다.

 

이날 행사에는 사천초등학교 재학생과 동문, 보훈단체 회원, 시민 등 400여 명이 참여해 1919년 사천에서 시작된 만세운동의 역사적 의미를 공유하고 그 정신을 계승하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다.

 

사천초등학교 만세운동은 1919년 3월 21일, 당시 사천공립보통학교 졸업식 날을 계기로 시작된 항일운동이다.

 

학생들은 일제의 감시를 피하기 위해 축구 경기를 가장한 뒤, 첫 골이 터지는 순간 품속에 숨겨둔 태극기를 꺼내 들고 만세를 외쳤다.

 

이후 일본 주재소에 끌려가 모진 고초를 겪으면서도 끝까지 굴하지 않았던 이들의 용기는 오늘날까지 사천의 자랑스러운 항일 역사로 남아있다.

 

행사는 사천초등학교 입구에 위치한 3·1운동 기념비 헌화를 시작으로 기념식이 이어졌다. 

 

기념식에서는 손미영 시인의 헌시 낭독과 광복회, 학생, 시민대표가 함께한 독립선언서 낭독, 학생대표 3명의 결의문 낭독이 진행되며 의미를 더했다.

 

이어서 참석자 전원이 참여한 만세삼창과 사천시여성합창단의 3·1절 노래 제창이 이어지며 현장의 열기를 한층 끌어올렸다.

 

특히, 사천초 재학생들이 직접 참여한 만세운동 재현 퍼포먼스는 행사에 깊은 감동을 더했다. 학생들은 일본 헌병의 탄압에 맞서 교문을 나서며 만세를 외치던 당시의 긴박한 상황을 생생하게 재현해, 107년 전 선배들의 용기와 애국정신을 현장에서 되살렸다.

 

행사의 마지막은 사천초등학교에서 사천읍시장까지 이어지는 독립만세 시가행진으로 마무리됐다. 참가자들은 거리 행진을 통해 시민들과 함께 독립운동의 감동과 나라 사랑의 의미를 공유하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다.

 

조용욱 추진위원장은 “어린 초등학생들이 앞장섰던 만세운동이라는 위대한 역사가 단순한 기념행사를 넘어 사천의 긍지이자 항일운동사의 중요한 축으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

 

시 관계자는 “일제의 억압 속에서도 두려움 없이 나라를 위해 나섰던 학생들의 용기는 우리 지역 항일운동사의 자랑스러운 유산”이라며 “앞으로도 선열들의 희생이 헛되지 않도록 보훈의 가치를 일상에서 실천하는 ‘보훈이 살아있는 도시 사천’을 만들어 가겠다”고 밝혔다.

 

한편, 사천시는 ‘사천통합보훈회관’ 준공을 계기로 보훈문화 확산과 역사교육 강화에 힘쓰며 시민과 함께하는 보훈 정책을 지속적으로 추진할 계획이다.
