제보에 따르면 창원시 간부 공무원이 경찰에 출입기자가 공무원들을 협박해 갈취를 일삼고 있으니, 경찰에서 수사를 해달라는 내용으로 아주 구체적이고 상세하게 경찰에 첩보했다는 것이다. 

 

경찰 또한 이를 심각하게 받아들여 곧바로 수사에 착수해, 10여 명의 사업부서 공무원들과 공보관 직원을 불러 수사했지만, 그런 사실이 없어 수사를 종결했다는 것이 경찰의 입장이다. 

 

창원시 간부공무원이 경찰에 첩보를 제공하면서 시작된 보복수사 청탁을 정리해보면, 2024년 7월 조명래 제2부시장의 연임이 시작되면서부터 일련의 일들은 시작됐다. 

 

2024년 7월 조명래 부시장이 연임되면서 지역 정가에서는 조 부시장 연임에 대한 반대 여론이 불붙듯이 확산되었고, 시민단체와 민주당 시의원들 심지어 국민의힘 소속 시의원들도 반발에 동참했다. 

 

당시 국민의힘 소속 시의원은 시정 질의를 통해 조 부시장의 인사 개입과 잦은 해외 방문, 특정인 인사에 직접 관여했다는 질의서를 출입기자들에게 사전에 배포했으나 돌연 취소해 이를 두고 뒷말들이 무성했다.

 

이런 분위기를 감지한 언론에서도 조 부시장의 연임에 대해 다루기 시작했고, 본지도 지역 민심을 담은 내용을 취재해 보도했다. 이후 조 부시장은 가짜 뉴스라며, 이를 보도한 기자를 언론중재위에 정정요청과 함께 1억원의 손해배상을 청구했다.
